How John Harris Learned About His Past
For 62 years Harris often wondered about the family he never knew. While watching a PBS special called “African American Lives” he was inspired to find answers. The past would not remain secret for long.
Research The Past
As inspiration turned to motivation, Harris started using several websites to learn more about his father and family history. He visited several sites to look up information and find clues that would help him put the pieces of his background together.
With a little research, Harris discovered that his father had been stabbed. The man suspected of the stabbings was never brought to trial. Although these facts disturbed him deeply, Harris found some comfort in finally finding the truth.
An Expanding Search
After learning about his father, Harris continued to search for information about his family tree. He didn’t have much to go on. At the start, he only knew the names of his grandmother and father. That didn’t deter him; Harris used the few details he had to learn more.
It was a time-consuming process, but Harris was determined. He threw himself into this quest so completely that he had difficulty doing much of anything else. In the end, his relentlessness paid off. It’s amazing what you can find online if you have a little patience.

John William Harris is not alone in his resolve to find information about his past. A recent poll showed that nearly 90% of all Americans would like to know more about their family tree.
