Father’s Day is almost here, so it’s time to pay homage to dads everywhere. We thought a great way to start would be to take a look at the history of this holiday.
The origin of Father’s Day goes all the way back to 1909 and a woman Sonora Dodd. She came up with the idea on Mother’s Day, and decided that dad’s needed a special day of their own. Sonora was inspired by her father, a Civil War Veteran who raised six children after being widowed. With her help, the first Father’s Day Celebration happened on June 19, 1910, the same month her beloved dad was born. The small event took place at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington but the story was picked up by newspapers and quickly became a sensation.
