Their reunion was unlike any other. Graduates from the Macon, Georgia class of 1959 gathered together in 2009, even though many of them never had an opportunity to meet during their high school days.

Schools in the 1950’s, like most other public locations, were segregated in Georgia. Kids were forced to attend different schools depending on the color of their skin, and those with white skin were further separated by gender. Fifty years later these people who were not allowed to associate with each other were finally able to connect.

It all began with the personal journey of a man named Tom Johnson. He grew up in Macon and enjoyed a very successful career which included serving as the publisher of the Los Angeles Times and president of CNN. Tom’s life changed drastically over the years, but he still felt the desire to reconnect with his roots.

In 2005 Johnson returned to Macon with his son, Wyatt. As the pair drove around town, a father recounted high school stories to his son. He talked about how students attended one of three schools: Ballard-Hudson, Lanier or Miller. Wyatt looked over at his father and said: “Dad, think about how many friends you missed getting to know.”

Johnson did spend time thinking about the people he never got the chance to meet. He decided to do something about it.

The first step was to find people who graduated from all three schools. Johnson wrote to each person and proposed they all get together for a luncheon. He explained that even though they were kept apart during their youth, they didn’t have to be separated anymore. People listened, and his classmates received the message with open hearts. A reunion date was set for October.

More than 200 former Macon students traveled hundreds of miles to reunite with people who went to high school with them, and others that should have. People greeted old friends and made new ones as the celebration began. It was an unprecedented event; former students coming together to make up for the time they had lost during the days of segregation. For this group, however, even that wasn’t enough.

The attendees agreed to plan an annual reunion. During the year each one would do what they could to break down barriers and bring people together regardless of their race, gender or any other factors. People created a list of 59 things the class of 59 could do to help make this world a better place.

One of their first goals centered around one person who refused to attend the luncheon. Johnson reached out to everyone he could and received an overwhelmingly positive response. Among the replies, however, was one full of hatred and anger. It came from a graduate of the all-white school, and it helped prove the fact that even in 2009 we are still dealing with racial issues.

When word of this hateful response got around to the revelers, their response was a little surprising. It would have been easy to react with anger, but they chose another path. They discussed ideas on how to help their classmate understand that no matter what color anyone is, we are all just people sharing our lives on this planet. With a little luck and a lot of patience the group hopes to have this person join them at their next reunion.

At PeopleFinders, we felt this story was worth sharing. We believe in the simple truth that people are people, no matter what color, race or gender they may be. Our goal is always to help people find and connect with each other, and it warms our hearts to hear of an event that restarted old friendships and kindled new ones.

We can all join the Macon class of 1959 in attempting to make our world a better place for everyone. Do what you can, celebrate the humanity we all share and thank you for reading the PeopleFinders People Search blog.

Anyone who watches the news at all can tell you; it’s been rough recently. Scandals, assaults, shootings – there’s just no way to make sense of it all.

Lately it seems almost impossible to find a story with a happy ending. It’s moments like these when our friends and families matter the most. Spending time with the people we care about may just be the best way to get through these difficult times.

At PeopleFinders we’re proud to help you find people so you can reunite with anyone who made an impression on your life. We know that the people who share your life are a big part of what makes you happy and keeps you smiling – even when the world seems to be falling to pieces.

Last week brought a flurry of bad news and stories that were difficult to digest. Certain events are so horrifying that we can’t even begin to understand them, but no matter what happens, we always have other people. Family. Friends. People who are there to comfort us when things are bad, and celebrate with us when they are good again.

Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by these tragic events. We’re all hoping for better times around the corner. Until then we can turn to each other for reassurance, do everything possible to keep our families secure and try to watch out for one another, because we’re all in this together. Stay safe out there, and thank you for reading the PeopleFinders People Search blog.

Right now there are approximately 130,000 kids in foster care programs throughout the United States. These children are hoping to find a place they can call home, and people to call family.

Adults all over the country are attempting to expand their families by adopting a young person from a foster home. The process can be difficult and time consuming, but the end result brings joy to so many lives. It is a progression that is celebrated every November as National Adoption Month. This years’ theme is “Answering the Call – You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.”

This celebration has earned the attention of the President. In October, Barack Obama recognized National Adoption Month with a Presidential proclamation. The document asserts that “During National Adoption Month, we honor those families that have strengthened America through adoption, and we recommit to reducing the number of children awaiting adoption into loving families.”

National Adoption Month’s origins trace back to 1976 when then-Governor Michael Dukakis established an Adoption Week in Massachusetts. President Gerald Ford became aware of this endeavor, and announced that the week would be recognized on a national level. By 1990 the event was expanded to a full month, and at the center of it all is National Adoption Day.

Saturday, November 21, 2009 will be National Adoption Day. It’s a day when law makers, judges, families and other adoption advocates work together to try and finalize as many adoptions as possible. 2009 marks the 10-year anniversary of this special occurrence and the goal is to find permanent homes for children in every state. You can learn more about National Adoption Day here.

At PeopleFinders we celebrate families of all types, and we honor the people who open their lives and share their hearts and homes with foster children. The process of adoption is all about the right people finding each other and making a connection. That is our focus too; we are dedicated to helping people find other people. So to all those participating in, promoting and celebrating National Adoption Month, we say thank-you.

A family can be whatever you choose to make it. This November, and all throughout the year, there are families of every kind who help make America the great country it is. May you and your loved ones enjoy a safe and prosperous Adoption Month this November, and thank you for reading the People Finders People Search blog.

This is the second consecutive year we’ve received that recognition.

Deloitte is not a typical company – it is a business entity that works with thousands of professionals from independent firms all over the world to provide audit, financial advisory, tax and other services to their clients. Every year Deloitte releases their list of the 500 fastest-growing technology based companies in the United States and Canada. PeopleFinders was happy to be on that list in 2008, and it feels great to be included again!

The dedicated folks at Deloitte have diligently kept track of the 500 fastest growing companies for more than a decade. They created their Fast 500 TM list in 1997, and its annual release has become a highly anticipated event. Winners of the 2009 Fast 500 TM were announced in October, so congratulations to all of the companies who earned their way onto the list.

There are ten categories on the Fast 500 TM List, and PeopleFinders won as an Internet based company. The list is based on the fiscal growth a company experiences over a 5-year period, so only the fastest growing companies are represented. Very few companies make it into the Fast 500 TM two years in a row, so this is quite an honor for us.

According to Deloitte’s list, PeopleFinders.com has grown by 257% over the last five years. This is remarkable, and we have you to thank. It’s the people who have trusted us to help them find other people all over the United States that made this accolade possible.

We’re always excited when we are able to help someone find family or friends that they’ve lost touch with over the years. Our goal is to help you find anyone, anywhere with the most useful and easy-to-use People Search, Background Check and Public Records services available today.

Thank you for helping us claim a spot on the Fast 500 List again this year, and thank you for reading our People Search blog.

On October 31, kids from all over the country will be excited to put on their favorite costumes and claim delicious treats in the name of trick-or-treating. While you’re getting ready for the big night, take a moment to think about some important Halloween safety rules to help protect your family.

Choosing A Costume

Half the fun of Halloween is dressing up, and kids can be very opinionated about what or whom they want to be. Parents often go through a lot of trouble to put these costumes together, but safety should always be one of the key components.
When you’re shopping for a costume, check the label to see if it is fire retardant. Your kids may be running past jack-o-lanterns with candles inside, so fire safety is essential. If the costume includes a mask, make sure your child can see through it clearly. You may have to expand the eyeholes yourself, but the mask must provide a clear line of vision.

Another consideration is how well others will be able to see your child’s costume at night. Many costumes come in darker colors, so it’s a good idea to add reflective tape so they will stand out to motorists. If the costume includes a prop like a toy sword or axe, make sure it is soft, flexible and not too large for your child.

Prepare For The Big Night
Before anyone sets out to collect goodies, decide which blocks you will visit. Once you determine your route, you can take a few extra precautions such as checking for registered sex offenders in the area, or running a background check on any address along your path.

It gets dark early in October, so trick-or-treaters should always have at least one good flashlight to help them see where they are going, and to help others see them. Don’t forget to load it with fresh batteries. Someone in the group should also carry a cell phone at all times, in case of an emergency.

Trick Or Treat!
An adult or older kid should always accompany young children when they go out on Halloween evening. It’s also a good idea to give each child a piece of paper with their name and your phone number, so a responsible adult will be able to contact you if your child gets separated from the group.

Street safety is essential on Halloween, so the chaperone should get everyone together and make sure the road is completely safe before anyone crosses. It’s best to keep everyone on the sidewalk for most of the journey, but now and then you will have to cross a street to get to more houses. Speaking of those houses, remind your children that it is never okay to enter a stranger’s home, and if an adult they don’t know tries to convince them to come inside the best thing to do is run away.

The Sweet, Sweet Aftermath
As soon as the trick-or-treating is over, kids will want to dive into their goody bags, but a responsible adult needs to look through the candy first. Give the kids some of your own candy to tide them over, but check out the snacks and make sure every treat is individually wrapped. If anything looks like it may have been tampered with, don’t take a risk, throw it away. Adults should also make sure younger kids don’t have hard candies that could be a choking hazard.

One final child safety tip is to explain to your children that Halloween is the only time when it is acceptable to take treats from people they don’t know. Compare the night to other annual holidays, and be clear that it is not usually okay to accept anything from a stranger.

Have a safe and thrilling Halloween, and thank you for reading the PeopleFinders People Search blog.

It’s the worst experience any parent can endure: their child is missing and a frantic search results in the most horrific news possible. The murder of a child is a pain that most people cannot even begin to comprehend.

Somer Thompson was a bright 7-year-old who attended elementary school in Orange Park, Florida. On Monday, October 19 she was walking home with her sister and some friends when the conversation turned to an argument that Somer had with another girl that morning. This upset Somer, and she ran off on her own. Her sister saw her disappear into a distant crowd. It was the last time she saw Somer alive.

The search for Somer Thompson received national media attention. An Amber Alert was set up immediately and law enforcement officials labored desperately to find the young girl. Missing child posters that prominently featured Somer’s smiling face were placed on every available surface between the Thompson home and the school. America held its breath as we waited to hear what had happened.

On Wednesday, October 21, police officers discovered the body of a young girl in a Georgia landfill near the Florida border. She was first identified based on a birthmark and her clothing, then later confirmed using dental records. They had found Somer Thompson.

Florida Sheriff Rick Beseler made the most difficult call of his life and notified Somer’s parents, Samuel and Diena Thompson, that their daughter had been murdered. The Thompson’s were devastated to have their deepest fear confirmed; their beautiful baby girl had been violently taken away from them.

Following this tragic news another intensive search began. FBI agents started working with police officers to find the person who committed this heinous crime. Florida officers immediately searched for registered sex offenders within a five-mile radius of the school Somer attended, but so far they have no suspects. Their search will continue in earnest until the murderer is found.

Although the Thompson family is overwhelmed by their loss, they remain dedicated to finding the predator responsible for this appalling deed. Somer’s mother told the world, “I want you to know that I will not sleep until this person is found. I hope they get you and I hope they make you pay for a long, long time.” Somer’s father boldly stated, “Gold help the sons of bitches who hurt my daughter. They better find them.”

Our hearts go out to the entire Thompson family. They have received an incredible outpouring of support from their community. On Thursday, October 22, people from all over the area walked to the Thompson’s home to hold a candlelight vigil. The group sang songs, dropped off hundreds of gifts and let the grieving family know that people care about them and the horrible ordeal they are suffering through. They are not alone.

Investigators believe that they will be able to track the killer down. The search is on, the net is being thrown out and as we all watch we can only hope and pray that the guilty party will be found quickly. Somer was last seen in a busy residential area, and there is optimism that someone may have seen something that might be useful. If you have any information that could help, please call the Sheriff’s Tip Hotline at (877) 227-6911.

Sunday, October 25 is National Mother-In-Law Day. It’s a time to celebrate the woman who is responsible for giving birth to the person you chose to marry.

It’s not always easy to deal with an extended family, and mother-in-laws tend to get a bad reputation. Although it may seem like it should be natural to automatically like and appreciate the mother of your spouse, that’s not always the case. So what do you do when you have problems with your mother-in-law?

There are a lot of great tips to help people get along with a difficult in-law, but perhaps the most important is to make sure you have the full support of your spouse. If your mother-in-law doesn’t show you the respect you deserve, talk to your significant other and explain how you feel. Be very cautious when you do this; remember that while you may be upset, you are talking about the other person’s mother.

With luck your spouse will understand and want to work with you to create a solution. The methods people use to do this will vary, but the end result should be that your spouse makes it clear to their mother that she is expected to treat you with kindness, avoid constant criticisms, include you in family activities and make an attempt to fix the problem. Talking about the situation is often the best way to begin; you may even be surprised to discover that your mother-in-law didn’t realize that tension existed between you two. If she was aware, a conversation with her child could be a great start towards building a better relationship.

Another essential approach is to set boundaries for the amount of time you spend around your mother-in-law. You and your spouse have created a new family, and it’s important for all of your in-laws to give you time and space to build your own life. Every couple needs to figure out what works for them – whether it’s only visiting in-laws on holidays and special occasions, planning regular get-togethers, or a more open door policy – you’ll want to establish your personal borders and be certain that everyone understands and sticks to them.

Married couples should also spread the joy to their relatives. The only time some people talk about their partner is when they are venting about an ongoing problem or recent fight. Remember that if your mother, or any other relative, only hears about the bad aspects of your marriage, it will probably taint their opinion of your spouse. Talk about the good times, express your joy over reconciliations and make sure the people from your “original” family know how happy you are with your “new” one – and that you are all part of the same family now.

The responsibility to keep the peace is not only on the children. Mothers should work hard to be gracious and help make their son or daughter-in-laws feel welcome. No mother wants to alienate her child, and sometimes that means putting in a little extra effort to be friendly to a new addition to the family. With a little patience and pleasantness moms may realize that they truly appreciate their new in-law. Putting in the effort to build a solid and happy extended family is always worthwhile.

At PeopleFinders.com we celebrate families of every kind. That’s why we work so hard to help you find people that you’ve lost touch with, whether it’s a mother-in-law, another relative or an old friend. We wish moms with married kids a very happy Mother-In-Law Day, and we thank you for reading the PeopleFinders People Search blog.

The boy was missing and thought to be trapped inside a homemade weather balloon that broke free and took flight in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The balloon was a Mylar covered contraption that contained a small basket on the bottom. No tests had been done to determine exactly how much weight the basket can handle, but it was thought to be able to hold up to 100 pounds – more than enough to carry young Falcon Heene.

When the balloon blew into the air from the Heene’s backyard, no one was sure of Falcon’s whereabouts. His brother Bradford said he had seen Falcon climb inside the basket, but hadn’t seen him come back out. The terrified family scoured the house in a frantic search, but Falcon was nowhere to be found. They came to the conclusion that the boy was stuck inside a balloon that was being swept across the sky high above Colorado.

Thanks largely to a live video of the balloon’s flight, the world began to watch and fear for the safety of Falcon Heene. All indicators seemed to confirm that the boy was inside the balloon; unable to see out and most certainly terrified. Talk turned to how to rescue the boy and bring the balloon safely to the ground.

Flights from Denver airport were put on hold, emergency vehicles stood by and the world watched breathlessly as the balloon was swept upwards in fast gusts of wind, at times reaching 7,000 feet. Then, the worst seemed to happen. A deputy reported seeing something drop out of the balloon, and a photo seemed to confirm that an object did fall to the ground. An intense search of the area began, but nothing turned up. Falcon’s fate seemed uncertain.

Finally, after 2 hours, the balloon landed. It dropped softly to the ground about 50 miles away from the Heene household, and rescue workers raced to the scene before it could take flight a second time. As the rescuers released the helium from the balloon and opened it they were surprised to find – nothing. No Falcon, and no sign that someone had been inside at all.

Later that evening the worried Heene family waited for news in their living room when young Falcon walked right in to join them. He had been hiding in the attic, afraid that he was in trouble with his father. Falcon was safe, but doubts arose about whether or not the entire incident was a publicity stunt.

The Heenes appeared on “Larry King Live” that night to talk about their ordeal. Falcon was asked why he remained hidden in the attic for so long, especially when the entire family was searching for him and calling his name. His reply was “You guys said we did this for the show”. That comment energized the idea that the balloon escapade was merely a hoax.

On Friday, October 16, Sheriff Jim Alderden stated that the police believed the incident was real, and the Heene family genuinely did think Falcon was inside the balloon. He noted that seasoned investigators had interviewed Falcon’s parents, and were “Completely convinced that this was a real deal, and not a hoax, based on all of their communication, their body language, their emotions that were displayed throughout the event of yesterday.”

These law enforcement officials have changed their tune. By Sunday, October 18, Sheriff Alderden claimed that the entire incident was a publicity stunt intended to help the Heene family land their own reality television show. The Sheriff went on to say that he intentionally misled the media when claiming that Falcon’s father Richard Heene was innocent, because he wanted the man to feel the police were on his side. This was done to maintain a sense of trust, and make it easier for authorities to discover the truth.

Ongoing investigations have led the police to believe that the balloon could not have held Falcon’s weight. Officials are now saying they aren’t even sure if Falcon was ever in the balloon, or if he was actually hiding in the attic. They feel the entire incident was a ruse to gain national media attention. If that’s true, this will be one of the most expensive pranks in recent history. Charges are likely to be filed against Falcon’s parents.

At PeopleFinders, we are happy that the family is together and safe. So what do you think? Was the entire thing a publicity stunt, or a terrifying situation with a happy conclusion? Leave us a comment to let us know your thoughts, and thank you for reading the People Search blog.
