It’s not unusual for a parent to visit their child at school. When 32-year-old Jeffrey D. Smith entered Canandaigua Primary School, he followed the proper procedures. He signed in at the front desk and asked to see his 9-year-old daughter.
But something was wrong. This man was not the young girl’s father. The name he signed did not belong to him.

Actual cover of Greaves' book
The recent release of a book on Amazon.com resulted in anger, outrage and threats. Thousands of people protested the book, and prepared to boycott Amazon if it wasn’t removed.
For a while, Amazon held firm. They suggested that refusing to sell a book would be censorship, and said people should be allowed to “make their own purchasing decisions.” Before long, however, the book disappeared from the popular website.

On August 24, 2009, a registered sex offender named Phillip Garrido entered the University of California in Berkeley with two young girls. He spoke to campus police official Lisa Campbell about hosting an event for his group, “God’s Desire.” Campbell found the trio’s behavior to be highly unusual, and told Garrido to come back the following day.
That night, Campbell asked police officer Ally Jacobs to join her for the meeting. Jacobs ran a background check on Garrido, and discovered that he was still on parole for kidnapping and raping a woman in 1976. She quickly agreed to attend.

Dennis Earl Bradford
When Jennifer Schuett was only 8-years-old she was kidnapped by Dennis Earl Bradford. The young girl was raped, dragged into the middle of a field and left to die. Once she was certain the man was gone, Jennifer tried to call for help, but couldn’t. Her abductor had slit her throat.
Jennifer was lucky to survive. After a grueling night alone, she was discovered by a group of kids who were playing games in the field. They ran to get help, and Jennifer was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

On Monday, May 17 2010, the Supreme Court declared Civil Commitment for sex offenders to be legal. This means the federal government may now hold sexual offenders indefinitely.
The concept of Civil Commitment was established by the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. Adam Walsh was abducted and murdered by a man who is thought to be a repeat sex offender. His father, John Walsh, went on to host the show “America’s Most Wanted.” He pushed for a law that would help protect families from experiencing the same suffering he endured.

It’s a situation that never should have been able to happen. For the last few weeks, 62-year-old John Alderson has been driving an ice cream truck in Roseville, California. Trouble is Alderson is not legally allowed to work in a position that puts him in unsupervised contact with children. He is a registered sex offender.
Parents from the Roseville area first noticed Alderson driving an ice cream truck over a decade ago. He hadn’t been seen for several years, but was back on his old route in April, 2010. By this time people were aware of his sexual offender status, and were outraged that a man who is listed as a child molester was selling ice cream to their children.

We’ve all heard the recent stories about sexual offenders who commit new crimes after spending time in prison. These unsettling reports create an uproar from citizens who are increasingly concerned for their own safety. The public may soon demand a re-examination of laws that are supposed to protect society from violent sexual offenders.
In 2000, John Albert Gardner III was convicted of incarcerating and molesting a 13-year-old girl. He was sentenced to six years in prison and set free after five. Gardner was placed on parole for three years, but he was allowed to live in close proximity to a school in southern California. By 2008 he was no longer required to check in with a parole officer. It was not the last time the police would deal with John Gardner.
