7 Ways To Make Happiness Happen

August 3rd, 2011

If you’re happy and you know it, then August is the perfect month for you. Thanks to a group called The Secret Society of Happy People, August is now Happiness Happens Month. That’s 31 days to focus on your own happiness and celebrate joy in others.

We all have our own definitions of happiness. But we don’t always take time to work on being happy people. In honor of Happiness Happens Month, here are 7 things you can do to make yourself and others a little happier.

1. Help People

There’s an old saying: “When you help others, you help yourself.” Helping others can be a cathartic experience. Making a positive difference in someone’s life makes you feel good in return. Studies have shown that volunteering and helping people just one hour a week can make a real impact in your life. And if you want to help even more, there are always people in need.

2. Share A Smile

Smiles are contagious. When you flash your pearly whites, others are likely to do the same. Smiling also provides some great health benefits. It helps improve your immune system and it releases serotonin, a chemical in the body that makes you feel happier.

3. Spend Time With Family & Friends

What makes a happy moment even better? Sharing it with loved ones. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all need people. Friends and family are there to cheer us up when we’re feeling down and celebrate with us during the good times. Want to be happier? Spend a little extra time with the people you care about.

4. Get Some Rest

We’re busy people. Between work, errands, chores and other obligations, our schedules fill up quickly. Sometimes we miss out on one of the things we need the most: sleep. Most of us need between 6 and 8 hours of shuteye each night. Even if you have an intense schedule, find the time to get some rest. You’ll be more productive, energetic and happier.

5. Laugh

People often write that they are LOLing, but how often do you really laugh out loud? A good laugh relieves stress, boosts the immune system and releases endorphins, a natural chemical that makes us feel better. Laughing is good for your heart and it’s a natural pain killer. There are always plenty of things to laugh at every day; we just need to notice them. And laughter is highly contagious. It’s a great way to spread joy to the people around you.

6. Focus On The Positive

It’s easy to notice the negative things in life. We all struggle with work, bills, time management … it can be overwhelming. Focusing on positive things takes a little more effort, but it’s worthwhile. Look for the small moments of happiness each day. Try to spend more time on the things that make you happy.

7. Manage Your Time

How busy are you? If your life is overstuffed with chores and responsibilities, it may be time to examine your schedule. Decide which items are important, and try to eliminate things that aren’t. Clearing your schedule a little makes time for better things, like laughing, spending time with friends and maybe even a quick nap.

How Does Happiness Happen For You?

We all have our own ways of finding and creating happiness. Think about the things that make you happy, and spend as much time as possible doing them. Make the world a happier place for you and everyone around you.
