If you’re happy and you know it, then August is the perfect month for you. Thanks to a group called The Secret Society of Happy People, August is now Happiness Happens Month. That’s 31 days to focus on your own happiness and celebrate joy in others.
We all have our own definitions of happiness. But we don’t all take time to work on actually being happy. In honor of Happiness Happens Months, here are 7 things you can do to make yourself and others a little happier.
1. Help People
There’s and an old saying: “When you help others, you help yourself.”
Helping people can be a cathartic experience. Making a positive difference in someone’s life makes you feel good in return. Studies have shown that volunteering and helping people for just one hour a week can make a real impact on your life. And the lives of others.
2. Share A Smile
Smiles are contagious. When you flash your pearly whites, others are likely to do the same.
Smiling also provides some great health benefits. It helps improve your immune system, and releases serotonin, a chemical in the body that makes you feel happier.
3. Spend Time With Family & Friends
What makes a happy moment even better? Sharing it with loved ones. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all need people. Family and friends can cheer us up when we’re feeling down, and celebrate with us during good times.
Want to be happier? Spend a little extra time with people you care about.
4. Get Some Rest
We’re busy people. Between work, errands, chores and other obligations, our schedules fill up quickly. Sometimes we miss out on one of the things we need the most: sleep.
Most of us need between 6 and 8 hours of shuteye each night. Even if you have an intense schedule, find the time to get some rest. You’ll be more productive, energetic and happier.
People often write that they are LOLing, but how often do you really laugh out loud? A good laugh relieves stress, boosts the immune system and releases endorphins, a natural chemical that makes us feel better.
Laughing is good for your heart and it’s a natural pain killer. There are always plenty of things to laugh at every day; we just need to notice them. And laughter is highly contagious. It’s a great way to spread joy to the people around you.
6. Be Positive
It’s easy to notice the negative things in life. We all struggle with bills, time management, and so much more. It can be overwhelming.
Focusing on positive things sometimes takes a little more effort, but it’s worthwhile. Look for the small moments each day. Try to spend to spend more time focusing on things that make you happy.
7. Manage Your Time
How busy are you? If your life is overburdened with chores and responsibilities, it may be time to examine your schedule. Sure, it’s important to get things done, but sometimes we take on too much.
Decide what tasks are important, and try to eliminate those that aren’t. Clearing your schedule a bit makes time for better thing, like spending time with friends, making happiness happen and maybe even a quick nap.
How Does Happiness Happen For You?
We all have our own ways of finding and creating happiness. Think about the things that bring you joy, and spend as much time as possible doing them.
