It’s a situation that never should have been able to happen. For the last few weeks, 62-year-old John Alderson has been driving an ice cream truck in Roseville, California. Trouble is Alderson is not legally allowed to work in a position that puts him in unsupervised contact with children. He is a registered sex offender.
Parents from the Roseville area first noticed Alderson driving an ice cream truck over a decade ago. He hadn’t been seen for several years, but was back on his old route in April, 2010. By this time people were aware of his sexual offender status, and were outraged that a man who is listed as a child molester was selling ice cream to their children.
Concerned residents worked together to stop Alderson, and inform their neighbors about this terrifying situation. They posted Facebook messages about Alderson and printed flyers that explained his offender status. Local police were also notified, and an investigation was soon underway.
Officers quickly confirmed that the man who was selling ice cream in several Roseville neighborhoods was not eligible to interact with children. Alderson had not applied for a vendor’s license, which is also a criminal offense. During the afternoon of April 14, officers stopped the man as he drove his truck near Olympus Junior High School. He was arrested and taken to Roseville City Jail.
Several children witnessed Alderson’s arrest, which is expected to lead to some difficult questions. Parents are preparing to explain that it’s not always easy to tell whether or not someone is a criminal, so it is essential to be as educated as possible. That’s why PeopleFinders offers a Free Sex Offender Alert Program – we want to help you get the facts you need about offenders who may be living near your home or child’s school. John Alderson is being charged with a misdemeanor, and will have to plead his case in court. Alderson’s previous arrest also resulted in a misdemeanor charge, which allowed him to keep his name out of official sex offender databases. Roseville police will investigate this case further, and worried parents hope that this time the name John Alderson will be entered into the national offender database for all to see.
