On September 30, 2009 Horia Cretan was working in the electronics store that he owns in New York. Most of the day went by like any other, but right around 4pm he heard harrowing screams coming from somewhere above him.
Cretan jumped into action. He ran out of his store and raced up the building’s fire escape. Every step he took brought him closer to a raging fire that sent black smoke billowing out of the building and rained shattered glass all over his body.
Despite the danger, something in Horia Cretan kept him moving. When he reached the fourth floor, he helped a man get outside through a window and saw a firefighter with a small boy in an apartment. The boy had inhaled a largeamount of smoke and was barely breathing.
Horia Cretan took the child in his arms and pulled him out to safety. Cretan carried the unconscious youth down the fire escape, stopping once to cover himself and the child from the glass that continued to crash down on top of them. By this time a large crowd had gathered, and the entire rescue was captured on video.
After covering the boy to protect him from further harm, Cretan gave the crowd a thumbs-up to let everyone know the victim was still alive. Cretan carried the child down to the ground and handed him over to medical professionals who gave the boy oxygen and rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center. The boy is expected to make a full recovery.
Cretan was immediately heralded as a hero. People in his community praised him for his brave deed, and word of the rescue spread quickly. He was asked to tell his amazing story the next day on the ABC News program “Good Morning America”. While there, Cretan did something else that grabbed the attention of the world.
During the show, Cretan talked about how he helped local firefighters rescue the young boy, but he also had something else he wanted to discuss. His girlfriend, a woman named Desiree, was called to the set. When she arrived, Cretan took her hand and got down on one knee.
Desiree smiled as Cretan told her that he knows he is a handful and suggested that with him around there is never a dull moment. Then he popped the question – Cretan proposed to Desiree live on national television. She immediately said yes.
It’s been quite a week for Horia Cretan. He helped save a young boy from a fire and got engaged to the girl of his dreams, and all within two days. We admire Cretan’s heroics, and his spirit. His actions remind us of how important the people in our lives truly are, and why we are dedicated to helping people find family and friends that they’ve lost touch with.
To Horia Cretan we say congratulations, and thank-you for having the spirit to place yourself at risk to help others. It just goes to show we really are all in this together. Take care of each other out there and thank you for reading the PeopleFinders People Search blog.
